What Makes “Golden Gas” So Expensive? Slanvert Unlocks the Secret to Cost-Efficient Helium Purification
Helium, often called the “golden gas,” plays a vital and irreplaceable role in advanced technologies, national defense, and medical research. However, China faces a severe shortage of domestic helium reserves, with low resource quality and challenging extraction processes—especially as high-purity helium remains heavily import-dependent.

A clean energy company in Ningxia has successfully launched China’s largest integrated LNG and helium co-production project, producing 1 million cubic meters of 99.999% pure helium annually alongside 400,000 tons of LNG. With a total investment of ¥680 million, the facility processes 2 million cubic meters of natural gas per day and achieves energy savings of around 15% compared to similar plants—cutting electricity use by 30 million kWh each year.

In this setup, compressors are key to the mixed refrigerant liquefaction cycle, handling high circulation volumes with strict sealing requirements. The helium extraction system uses flash gas from upstream LNG as feedstock and employs a mixed refrigerant plus nitrogen circulation for crude helium recovery. Final purification uses high-pressure condensation and low-temperature adsorption with liquid nitrogen cooling—offering low investment, high efficiency, and simple operation.

To ensure optimal compressor performance, the company selected Slanvert’s custom 10kV high-voltage variable frequency drive (VFD) system. Featuring seamless transition from variable to fixed frequency via high-voltage grid-synchronization technology, this system enhances efficiency and precision while significantly reducing operational costs.

Slanvert’s engineering team supported the project end-to-end, from product selection to on-site commissioning, successfully addressing issues like high starting current and grid impact in large motor applications. The client praised Slanvert’s professionalism and expertise, laying the foundation for deeper future collaboration.
This partnership not only marks a breakthrough in domestic helium production but also helps ease China’s helium supply bottleneck, safeguards strategic gas supply for high-tech industries, and provides valuable insights for the global energy transition.
