Application of SLANVERT SBH Series Medium Voltage VFDs in Dushan Waterworks Solution
Features and Benefits
Abstract: Electric power consumption accounts for around 35% of total water production costs in water supply systems, mostly consumed by water pumps. This paper introduces the application of SLANVERT SBH Series medium-voltage VFDs at Dushan Waterworks, presenting a practical solution for variable-frequency retrofits in the water-supply industry.
Keywords: Water Supply; SBH Series VFD; Solution
1. Introduction
Dushan Waterworks, a key local livelihood project, has a 50 000 m³/d current capacity and a long-term expansion target of 100 000 m³/d. Located in a high-elevation zone, the plant operates six 315 kW /10 kV water delivery pumps. Large day-night water demand differences force frequent pump start-stop cycles, creating mechanical and grid shocks, raising failure rates for motors, pumps and valves, and increasing maintenance expenses.
2. Brief Process Overview
Raw water goes through intake, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination. Treated water is stored in clear water tanks and then pressurized and distributed to end users via pipe networks.

3. VFD Principle & Main Features
The SLANVERT SBH VFD uses cascaded H-bridge cell topology. Its multi-pulse rectifier achieves grid-side power factor above 0.95. Low dv/dt stepped SVPWM output allows direct driving of standard asynchronous motors without output filters. Key strengths include modular cell bypass redundancy, flying start capability, AVR automatic voltage regulation and comprehensive electrical protection functions.

4. On-site Speed-regulation Scheme
Two out of six pumps normally run, with four on standby. Pumps operate at mains frequency in peak hours while only one pump runs during off-peak periods. The plant adopted the SLANVERT SBH100630 VFD for pump retrofitting. Considering the installed multifunction checkvalve characteristic, the minimum operating frequency is locked at 35 Hz. Built-in PID control realizes stable constant-pressure water-supply.

5. Conclusion
Since commissioning, the SLANVERT SBH series VFD has run fault-free continuously. It mitigates damage to pipeline sealing, extends equipment service life and reduces maintenance work. Higher system automation cuts electricity and water consumption, well matching national energy-saving initiatives and bringing notable economic benefits.
